Indie Games Are Booming in 2026 — But It's Increasingly Winner-Take-All

Two things are true about indie games in 2026: it’s the best year the category has ever had, and it’s also never been harder to be an average indie developer. Both are visible in the same set of numbers.

The boom, in numbers

Independent games accounted for 25% of Steam’s total revenue in 2025, and the global indie game market is projected to hit $5.54 billion in 2026, on its way to a projected $10.83 billion by 2031 — a 14.54% compound annual growth rate. Steam overall is hitting record highs, with PC/console revenue up 13%.

The breakout hits

A handful of titles are doing an outsized amount of that work. R.E.P.O., PEAK, and Schedule I alone sold more than 42 million copies combined and grossed $377.5 million on Steam in 2025. Elsewhere in the category:

  • Hollow Knight: Silksong sold 7 million copies in its first three months
  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 topped 8 million units and won Best Independent Game at The Game Awards 2025

These aren’t small indie successes — they’re outselling plenty of AAA releases, on budgets a fraction of the size.

The part that doesn’t make headlines

Total indie revenue on Steam reached $650 million in Q1 2026 alone. But that money is concentrating hard: the median indie game makes just $3,947 in total lifetime revenue. Put those two numbers side by side and the shape of the market becomes clear — a small number of breakout hits are pulling in hundreds of millions, while the typical indie release earns less than a part-time job’s monthly pay, across its entire lifetime.

That’s not a new dynamic for indie games, but 2026’s data shows it sharpening rather than easing. Steam’s algorithm, marketing costs, and sheer volume of releases all favor games that break out early — and increasingly, games that don’t break out early don’t break out at all.

What it means for developers

The takeaway isn’t “don’t make an indie game” — it’s that the strategy matters more than ever. Games that carve out a specific, sharable hook (co-op chaos like R.E.P.O. and PEAK, a beloved sequel like Silksong, genuine craft like Clair Obscur) are the ones breaking through the noise. Everything in the middle is fighting for a shrinking slice of attention.

Curious how AI tools fit into indie production specifically? Half the industry is already using generative AI — indie studios included, often out of necessity rather than choice.
